Bai Gengyan was a prominent Chinese painter and art educator, born in Chongqing, China in 1940. He was known for his modernist approach to traditional Chinese painting, which combined classical techniques with contemporary themes and styles. His interest in painting began at a young age, and he studied at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in the 1960s. He was influenced by the artistic movements of the time, including Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art, and his paintings began to incorporate elements of these styles. 

In the 1980s, Bai became a leading figure in the "New Wave" movement of Chinese art, which rejected the strictures of traditional Chinese painting in favor of more experimental approaches. He experimented with new materials, such as acrylic paint and mixed media, and his paintings often featured bold, abstract forms and vibrant colors.
